This is part 1 of 2 of a YouTube video about REH’s Conan, that attempts to unpack the history of the character’s meteoric rise in popular culture in the 1970s and 1980s. I’ll post part 2 later after some editing.
Part 2 is less of a love letter about the comics and the times, and includes my impressions about gender and other issues in Marvel’s series Conan the Barbarian (CTB). A number of sources were consulted and used in making the video. Among the best were Roy Thomas’s editorial pages in Marvel’s Conan Classic (1994) that feature color reprints of the early issues of CTB. Thomas’s commentary is filled with interesting details about creating the series with Barry Windsor-Smith, like hidden messages in the panels, and dodging the Comics Code Authority.
